YoonSun Choi, M.A. in Psychology, candidate for M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
I am a pre-license graduate student studying counseling psychology at Lesley University. Prior to this, I obtained a master’s degree in psychology from Wake Forest University. And I worked in academia, conducting and supporting human behavioral research for almost a decade. The myriad of human behavior is fascinating to me. Combining the two fields of training has given me the opportunity to utilize all my skills and strengths towards helping others. Through my own personal experiences and journey into parenthood, I have found inspiration to change careers and help support, in particular, parents, children, and families.
Currently in graduate school, I am learning different theories and therapeutic models for human experiences. Although still developing in its nascent stage, my own emerging theoretical orientation is Rogerian, based on Carl Roger’s theory. My emerging clinical approach is person-centered, as I believe that the client is the expert of their own lived experiences. I am also drawn to aspects of cognitive behavioral theory, as I believe that sometimes, some of our thoughts and/or behaviors that used to serve us well in the past are no longer serving us now because they do not match the current season of life that we are in. I am also exploring IFS and family systems theories, as I also believe that we all have many parts within ourselves and no one truly operates in isolation. We are all in this together, even if it does not seem to be the case.
Lastly, as an Asian American woman, multicultural awareness in my counseling competence is important to me. There are a lot of “-isms” hurting people both visibly and invisibly. No matter who my client is, I am looking forward to working with people of all ages and backgrounds. Everyone has a story. I want to be there to listen to my client when it is told, to help as needed for it to be re-written, and to support my client along the way when it is changed to improve one’s mental health and well-being.
